So tomorrow I’m heading to Madrid and Barcelona with Richard Price, otherwise known as the man I live with, because his novel Lush Life is coming out in Spain next week. We’ll be getting to see a good friend and fellow novelist Juan Gabriel Vasquez. His first novel translated into English, The Informers, is one of my favorite novels. Set in Vasquez’s native Colombia, it’s about the United States effort during World War II to get allies across the world to incarcerate Nazis. The problem with this idea was the evidence was all too often shaky, provided by informers who had various motives, not all of them pure, to target someone as a Nazi. Some anti-Fascists were imprisoned along with the Nazis. Sound familiar? The similarities to the global war on terror are obvious. It’s also an important part of my first novel Harbor.
